06- Initial Research- Target Audience: NME

NME Target Audience:

The paper was established in 1949, when it was bought by London music promoter Maurice Kinn, for the sum of £1,000, just 15 minutes before it was due to be officially closed. She relaunched as the New Musical Express, and published it in a non-glossy tabloid format on standard newsprint. In 1952, it created the first UK Singles Chart, a list of the Top Twelve best-selling singles. They were sourced by the magazine itself from sales in regional stores around the UK.

In the 60s, the genre focuseed on new music at the time, and appealed to the new age music gnere. In the 70s, New Music Express almost faced closure due to dropping sales. The company decided that they needed younger editors to fit in with the punk scene, and by the late 70s, after creating a more political outlook, it became the most important music paper in the country. They mostly targetted the punk scene.

NME magazine conducted a survey and they found that:
The magazine targets males aged 17-30
Average age of 25
73% of audience are male
73% of audience belong to the social grade ABC1
34% work full time, 18% work part-time and 26% are students
The readers are very modern, young and trendy who enjoy music, films and technology and buy the magazine on a regular basis.
